Melody Mondays - “All of the Lights” instrumental cover by the Portland Cello Project
The Portland Cello Project created this great interpretation of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights.” It’s the song stripped of the bass beat, the rapping, and the Rihanna. It’s lush, layered and luminous. (Yes, I did go for the alliteration and the pun all in one.) It also does a wonderful job of exposing what’s beneath many of Kanye’s songs—depth.
Kanye West is one of my favorite producers across all genres. I love the way he dares to blend so many different musical styles, instruments and sounds together. He’s almost brash in his combinations—exemplified by his latest music video for “All of the Lights” where he contrasts a soft black and white nostalgia with gaudy, blaring, and bold lights, words and costumes. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but when it does it’s fantastic. At the very least, I’m always excited to listen to new Kanye music because he’s always experimenting, and constantly conveying something new to me. Though admittedly, he often leaves a bit to be desired lyrically.
